Across the Blues: My Jawakara Jet Ski Adventure

The Lagoon of a Hundred Hues

As the MSTS water sports team handed me a life jacket and helped me onto the Jet Ski, I took one last look at the lagoon. It wasn’t just blue. It was a tapestry of colors, turquoise melting into teal, fading into soft crystal blues and, further out, plunging into an intense midnight shade. Even before I pressed the throttle, I felt like I was floating in a dream.
My instructor Haisham, a calm and friendly local guide with sun-tanned skin and salt in his hair, nodded at me with a smile. “Ready?” he asked.
I nodded. And then, just like that, we were flying.
The engine roared to life beneath me, and the Jet Ski surged forward. Salt mist sprayed into the air, my laughter rising with each bounce over the gentle waves. The wind tugged at my hair as we cruised past Jawakara’s twin islands Mabin and Dheru, connected by more than just a sandbank. Their dual charm lay in their seamless blend of adventure and tranquility, energy and elegance.

Into the Wild Heart of Hudhufushi

Our first real stop was Hudhufushi-the locals affectionately call it “V Island.” I hadn’t known what to expect, but as we approached, the scenery shifted. The lagoon narrowed and stilled, the water shallowed, and thick green mangroves rose like a secret garden from the sea.
“This area,” my instructor said, switching off the engine so we could drift in silence, “is where saltwater meets fresh. It’s a sacred nursery. Sharks breed here. Fish come to begin life.”
I sat in stillness, letting the hush of the mangrove surround me. It was hard to imagine we were still on the same Jet Ski tour, it felt like we’d stepped into another world, where time slowed and nature whispered her secrets. The trees leaned in, thick with leaves. Tiny ripples danced across the glassy surface. It was wild. Undisturbed. Magical. Jet Skis are the only way to explore this place; boats can’t get through the shallows. And I was grateful for the exclusivity. This was a privilege, one that left me in awe.

Selhifushi & the Sandbank That Stretches Forever

Back on open water, we veered toward Selhifushi, another small island framed by perfect beaches. It was the kind of island you imagine in your dreams, untouched, sun-kissed, with palms swaying lazily in the breeze. But the real showstopper came after: an impossibly long sandbank that seemed to stretch all the way to the horizon. We stopped the Jet Ski for a moment to take it in. On both sides, the sea glimmered under the afternoon sun, and the strip of white sand between them looked too perfect to be real.
I kicked off my sandals and walked barefoot for a bit, feeling like I’d stumbled into a movie set. It was just me, the sea, and a stretch of paradise that looked like it belonged to no one, and yet welcomed everyone.

Meeting the Sharks (and Maybe the Dolphins)

The final leg of the tour took a thrilling turn. We approached a nurse shark point, not far from the resort but far enough to feel wild. The water was deeper here, darker, with visible movement below the surface. And then we saw them, dozens of nurse sharks, gliding gracefully like shadows.
“They’re harmless,” the guide reassured. “Gentle giants of the reef.”
Some guests snorkel here, slipping into the water to swim alongside them. I stayed on the Jet Ski, watching them with wide eyes and a pounding heart. Even from above, their size and serenity left me spellbound. Then, like a bonus prize from nature, a pod of dolphins showed up dancing, twirling, and playfully swimming beside us. It was as if they were putting on a private show, weaving in and out of the water with effortless grace. We just sat there for a while, engines off, hearts full.

More Than Just a Tour

Back at the MSTS Water Sports Centre, I met Ibrahim Maaz, the Water Sports Manager, a passionate man whose love for Jawakara was as evident as the sun overhead. “People think it’s just about riding fast,” he said with a smile. “But what we offer here, it’s about connection. With nature. With the moment. With yourself.”
He told me about unexplored reefs around the islands, hidden channels, and sunrise rides that turn the ocean pink. The Jet Ski tour, he said, was just one of many ways’ guests could discover the magic of Jawakara. And he was right. This wasn’t just a tour. It was a journey. A 90-minute story I got to live.

A Final Thought

Whether you’re a thrill-seeker or a curious soul looking for something extraordinary, the Jet Ski experience in Jawakara is something you shouldn’t miss. You don’t need to know how to swim. You don’t need to be fearless. You just need to show up with an open heart and let the ocean do the rest.
Because in Jawakara, every wave tells a story. And trust me, it’s one you’ll want to be part of.
