There are massages, and then there are moments of profound stillness that linger in your body and soul long after you’ve left the massage bed. That’s exactly what I experienced at Sulha Spa, nestled in the heart of Jawakara Islands Maldives, a sanctuary where time slows down and healing begins the moment you step inside.
The First Impression – A Space That Speaks Peace
It was a sun-drenched afternoon when I made my way to the garden spa pavilion on Mabin Island, one of two tranquil Sulha Spa locations across the resort. Set amidst tropical greenery and shaded by lush palm fronds, the pavilion felt like a hidden retreat, humble, grounded, and beautifully in sync with nature. There was something sacred in the stillness here.
I was welcomed with a warm smile and a homemade herbal tea, brewed from a traditional Asian recipe with lemongrass and pandan leaf – its soothing scent and earthy taste felt like sipping peace in a cup. With every sip, the stress of the everyday melted away.
An Unexpected Message from the Universe
Before the treatment began, I was invited to participate in a beautiful little ritual. A tray was presented with eight smooth energy stones laid face down. With my eyes closed, I was invited to choose the one I felt most connected to, the stone that called out to me with an unspoken pull. Trusting my intuition, I reached out, turned one over, and saw a single word carved into the stone: “Embrace.”
I paused. In that quiet, sunlit moment, it felt as if the universe had sent a message. Embrace the moment. Embrace the stillness. Embrace the now. And with that, I was gently guided to the treatment room by Chau, my Vietnamese therapist.
Tibetan Singing Bowl Massage – A Symphony of Healing
The signature treatment I’d chosen was the Tibetan Singing Bowl Massage, a holistic therapy combining the soothing rhythm of massage with the meditative tones of sound healing.
The room itself was an experience. Earth-toned interiors bathed in natural light, subtle scents of healing herbs in the air, and the faint sound of nature just beyond the open walls, it all formed the perfect nest for healing.
Chau began the session with a gentle strike of the singing bowl. I stepped into the smooth, round basin as its resonant tones shimmered softly through the space. The vibrations seemed to settle around me, cleansing the air, clearing negative energy, and grounding me into the present. I felt my mind go quiet, my breath deepen, and my body loosen its grip on stress.
What followed was a masterfully tailored massage using a warm herbal balm. Chau’s hands moved with confidence and care, stretching tight muscles, unlocking tension, and coaxing energy back into balance. Her technique was gentle yet firm, intuitive, and deeply therapeutic. It wasn’t just about relieving tension; it was about realigning energy, promoting inner calm, and bringing the body back to its natural rhythm.
At different points throughout the treatment, the singing bowl was played again, this time placed gently near my head, heart, and legs. The sound moved through me like a warm current, sending waves of tranquility through every cell. By the time the session came to an end, I wasn’t sure where my body ended and the bed began. I felt light, yet grounded. Awake, yet serene. Reenergized, yet utterly relaxed.
A Farewell Full of Warmth
As I slowly sat up, Chau gave me a moment to gather myself before walking me back to the spa reception. Waiting for me was a warm pot of ginger tea and a small plate of freshly sliced coconuts cookies, a simple but soul-nourishing touch. It felt like the last hug in a deeply personal experience.
As I sipped the tea, I looked out into the garden, reflecting on the word etched into my stone: Embrace.
This was more than a massage. It was a moment of quiet transformation, a return to self. A chance to release the noise and hold space for peace.
Final Thoughts
If you ever find yourself in the Maldives, especially at Jawakara Islands Resort, do yourself a favor and make time for a journey at Sulha Spa. Whether in the overwater pavilion above the lagoon or the secluded garden sanctuary on Mabin Island, every experience is infused with thoughtfulness, intention, and soul.
For me, that one word, ‘Embrace’ summed it all up.
Because sometimes, healing isn’t about doing anything. It’s about surrendering. And simply allowing yourself to feel everything, one breath, one stroke, one sound at a time.
